On Monday, July 27 Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Vice President Joe Biden announced that New York has been selected by the Department of Defense to lead a prestigious, multi-state Integrated Photonics Institute for Manufacturing Innovation.

With a board of directors headquartered in Rochester, the $110 million federal grant awarded to the SUNY Polytechnic-led “American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics” will support a high-tech consortium with business operations, a company incubator and accelerator, and workforce training.

The institute's work will lead to the attraction of thousands of high tech, advanced research, and manufacturing jobs in Rochester and throughout Upstate. Governor Cuomo stated, “New York has always been a leader when it comes to thinking big about what tomorrow holds – and today in Rochester, we’re seeing an even brighter vision for what the future will be."

"The Rochester region, with one of the largest photonics manufacturing hubs in the nation, plus academic centers with renowned work in microsystems, imaging science and packaging, is uniquely positioned to make great contributions in this field," said RIT President, Dr. Bill Destler.

As New York's first-ever photonics consortium, this institute will ensure innovation based on new technology.

2015 Wny optics/photonics golf tournament sells out

On July 16, members of the optics and photonics industries gathered at Shadow Lake and Shadow Pines Golf Clubs to participate in the annual charity event benefiting Golisano Children's Hospital.

The event has grown each year since the first tournament in 2000, and this year the tournament sold out - leading to the decision to include a third course for next year's event!

Over $200,000 has been raised by this great event and 316 golfers participated this year alone. Carol Corey of Sydor shot a hole-in-one, while the Melles Griot group had the best score of the day.

Thank you to all who participated!
